In this first part of the film people follow a social structure when communicating. It starts off with the prison guard talking to the prisoner however he wanted. This was his turf and he was in charge. The prison guard seems to really know his place on the social ladder because once the prisoner escaped and later on because the mayor he held his tongue even though he had something to say. He was now a policeman in the same town as the prisoner who escaped. In the scene after leaving the factory he notice that the mayor remind him of the prisoner who escaped and he mentioned it a bit but then later say he would not dare. As in he would not dare speak to the mayor of the town in such a way because he knows his place.
In the film I also saw people communicating based off of morals. When the prisoner first escaped a wealthy welcomed him into his home. He feed him and hosted him. He treated him not as a peasant but as a man. This wealthy man was a man of God. When the guards caught Hugh Jackman trying to run off in the night with all the silver, the wealthy man let him go. He told him to do something positive with the silver and always remember God. When Jackman later because mayor he doesn't forget where came from. He tries to be as fair as he can. He tries to help the ones that need help the most and did not treat people differently because of his new social status.
Communication Ethics aren't just one way in this film. People's experiences and their upbringings have a lot to do with how they choose to communicate.
I agree that the community within this film follow a strict social structure of communication that differs based on social class. I like that you pointed out how the character played by Hugh Jackman displayed a consistent set of morals while communicating with any and everybody he encountered. Even when he had the chance to kill the officer that had treated him so badly and had been searching for him to throw him in jail for so many years. I am interested in seeing how the conflict between the two characters ends and if they will find a way to amend their bad history with one another
