While reading chapter 2, one thing attracted my attention and that was how the author combined philosophy of communication and application of commnication to define cmmunication ethics. As my understanding, communication ethics is neither a static notion that you should awlasy keep in mind nor a thing that you can learn only from book. It varies as time goes by, but has a historical, philosophical origin that you should keep track of. As a historical origin, we should be aware of philosophy of communication, which gives us a coherent understanding of the importance of communication from the past (33). It essentially focuses on sking "why" questions of everything happened, which lead us to contemplate the situations or the things that we are having right now. From my experience, I always dreamt of studying abroad in United States because I wanted to contribute myself to the bigger world and help the people all over the world (Even though I didn't exactly know what should I be in the future) and, finally, I am here to go to the school as I wished. However, I sometimes forget why am I here and feel lost, having trouble studying well. In other words, I'm less likely to be motivated and lose my own ethics of determination and resolution as I am less concerned about the essential question of why should I be here or why did I dreamt of studying abroad with what determination since I was young. Reflecting on my experience, what the philosophy of communication means in the text was better understandable.
Also, communication ethics does not stay on the past or the history. As I mentioned above, it varies all the time. Therefore, it is very important to put the theory into the action by our own will. For example, based on my previous experience, I should try to revive my determined heart and put it into the present so that I can be motivated and study hard with great joy and fulfillment. In other words, I am able to keep my ethics (I see ethics as my own right or wrong criteria regarding to my situation. Here, it means not to give up or give in to my stagnated time) by thinking back of why I decided to or so determined to be here (philosophy) and studying hard and winning my life.

ReplyDeleteFirst, congratulations on being here and working on your dream. It is an admirable thing to do, especially when you have to travel so far and go into a different culture. It says a lot about your character.
ReplyDeleteIt is easy to forget why we started doing things, especially when sometimes we become overwhelmed with the world around us. It seems like you have a very strong grasp in the philosophy of communication, explaining why you are doing what you are doing at the moment and the different forces that have driven you to have come this far.
It is also important to link the philosophy of communication to the applied communication, the how. Was the applied communication your passion for being part of a bigger world, or does the applied communication come now and is defined by what you do and how you become a part of that bigger world through your studies? As we discussed, the assumption is that the philosophy of communication is primary to applied communication, but the how can be viewed as the preceding factors leading to the why or the effects of the why and how they are addressed. It’s fascinating to think of the linkage between the two and how the applied communication can be either the cause or effect of the philosophy of communication.
