The ethics of communication keep of changing in time. For example, people used to do slavery in the past and now, slavery is no longer a common thing because today, society's way of thinking is different from what it used to. However, there is no defining which one is right and which one is wrong for both today and the past's communication ethics share the same goal which is to reach what's good.
There are choices to be made and we usually choose the choice that could bring a positive outcome. However, we should look at our surroundings and try to not only bring good to ourselves, but also to those around us. Multiplicity of goods is when both good and bad features are side by side.
I always try to imagine myself in other people's shoes and perspective before jumping into conclusion. As an individual, I believe that we all share different perspectives on different matters. It does not mean that one perspective is correct and the others are incorrect, it just simply means that we need to choose the best way to approach people because we might not share the same point of view.
One of the example from my experience is when my sister is cooking. When she asks if the food is good or not and it's not that good, i have two options one is telling her the truth and gives her my opinion about what's lacking or two, lie and tell her that her food is flawless. Now even though both of those options are not wrong, the outcomes are different. If I tell her what's lacking, she could improve her cooking the next time however, it might hurt her feelings. If I lie to her, she wouldn't be able to improve her cooking and maybe someone else would tell her about it someday and it would hurt her feeling more.
There is just no right or wrong with the choices that we made. It's just that each decision that we make will bring different outcomes and one outcome might be better than the other one.
Joceline,
ReplyDeleteI think you raised an interesting point connecting multiplicity of goods with slavery and I haven't thought about it that way. You are right, maybe these people that had people as slaves didn't think there was anything wrong with their actions. It is important to have in mind that society's values is constantly changing and maybe we should look at how it is changing. Women's right to vote might have seen unethical back in time, but a lot has changed since then, today it seems very unethical for them not to have the right to vote.
