Chapter one talked a lot about post modernism and what "goods" we seek to protect and promote. I can relate theses terms to Les Miserables, especially to the character Javert. Post modernism challenges the assumption that there is only one form of rationality or reasoning. Javert thought the opposite way and use the law as his moral code to prove that there was no other way to reason with it. He would not empathize with any people who broke the law no matter how little the crime was. On the other hand, he was protecting and promoting his moral code because he believed it was right.
Applying this concept to today's society is very interesting. As a society we are very democratic and accepting of others view points on specific topics, which was not the case in this movie. It is important to understand that everyone has opinions and we should promote and protect those views that we have. We need to also keep an open mind and be accepting of other's ideas because sometimes there are multiple right answers to a question.
Javert does not hold an ethical standard of communication ethics. He is not accepting of any other view point and firmly believes that the law is the only right answer to solve a problem. I think that Javert has self reflected and firmly knows what he believes in but is not open minded towards others opinions, which is a very important aspect of communication ethics. One of the definitions of communication ethics is the examination of competing views of the good taken into communicative action. from my perspective one of the most important concepts of communication ethics is to self reflect and know why you believe what you believe, but to also be very open minded and accepting of other view points which Javert lacked in this movie.
