Chapter 5

"Dialogic ethics is the meeting place for the learning in an age of difference"(81). This quote from the book stuck out to me because it encompasses the major topics from this chapter, learning and difference. The book states how a monologue is a certain way of learning by taking notes and listening, but there is no engagement or debate that will take place to truly learn from each others differences.

I was in a debate with another classmate about whether the age to consume alcohol should be lowered or stay the same as it is now. Debating and conversing with one another using the "Dialogic Learning Model of communication ethics" allowed us to effectively get our points and opinions to one another while listening attentively. This was no monologue, we both negotiated a certain topic that gave very differing viewpoints. At the end of the debate we both learned from one another and essentially "reshaped" our outlook on the subject.

"Learning through engagement with the other, with that which or whom we do not know, reshapes us"(83). Learning something new on a topic or issue by attentively listening and understanding someone else's perspective can transform and catch us by surprise. Following the Dialogic Learning Model is a very effective way to respectfully and attentively listen to another person while negotiating your viewpoint and eventually learning from that difference.
