Dialogic Communication Ethics
Is the idea that we as people all have
different ideas, thoughts and values and can be applied by accepting and
respecting those differences in any interaction with other people in our
everyday lives. “Difference is the key to learning and living well in a
postmodern culture” (80). The theory
also tells us why and how differences are so important in any culture. The
basic is simple and according to the book “difference opens the door to
learning”.
I believe that Dialogic Communication
Ethics can be one of the most important perspectives in our everyday lives
since it teach us to get a better understanding of the world around us.
You bring up a view key components in your comment that reflect an idealized view of how each person should accept and respect those different from us. I believe you are right that we should all be doing this on a daily bases. As Wendy mentioned in class today this is not always easy to do with such diversity in our modern world and crossing the moral ground between diversity will always be present. I think your quote regarding “learning” is a major development in building relationships within diverse situations is a great summary of using dialogue. I think if we are not open to learning, the acceptation and respect will not exist within communication ethics.
ReplyDeleteRonald Arnett states, “Dialogic ethics begins with one basic prescription-respect whatever is before you and take it seriously” (Pg. 91). I think you addressing learning as a factor of incorporating and acknowledging diversity can reflect back to his basic statement. When you are learning about another individual you are taking the time and energy to focus on them. You are taking the dialogue seriously and with effort of find a common good. I think you are doing this by going to debates as you stated. Even though the point of the republican ideas is not what you agree with, you are encouraging to learn from what they have to say. I think thats great!
I like how you note your conscious effort to engage in communication ethics in everyday dialogue. We live on a very diverse campus where one needs to be open to different cultural perspectives. We have discussed in class about how communication can fail when someone isn't mindful of another's good. As you mentioned in your political example, I too have a hard time seeing the republican view. Most of it goes against my ideology which is why I think I tend to ignore and avoid conversation. I want to be able to talk to them and hear their views without feeling my blood boil, but I get very offended by how they see different sides of issues. I can have conversations with republicans about non-political issues, which is a step in the right direction. The good we create through dialogue, and the respect we form with our partner in dialogue, help us better understand their views. This can be a long process though.

ReplyDeleteThat is true. In my intercultural communication class, I have discussed that we learn from differences more than similarities. It is important to talk with someone who has same opinion with you so that you can expand and have confidence about your idea. On the other hand, it is also significant to get different opinion to reconsider about yourself. Dialogic communication helps us to improve our critical thinking. In order to make it effective, as you said, we need to be ready for accepting and respecting differences. Also, we should be willing to share our opinion even if it is completely different from others.
ReplyDeleteSince I’m from conservative and collectivistic country, I can learn a lot by listening and understanding what American people think and believe. For example, one of my classmates said marijuana should be regal. I could not agree with him and I still don't think it is right, but by asking him why he thinks so, my perspective and knowledge was broadened. He said it should be regal so that we can establish regulation for those who use it secretly. Even though we cannot totally agree with others’ opinion, it is worth sharing differences and being open-minded to them.
