Firstly I start with the definition of dialogue, it is described as "begin with the ground under our feet, the narrative that gives shape to what we consider good, and learning from the ground of the Other, calling us to attend to the meaning emergent in the meeting of a given historical moment. Difference is the key to learning and living well in a postmodern culture. Difference is the energy that makes dialogue possible"( P 80).
As there are differences in dialogue, how to keep dialogue continuing, or holding which kind of dialogic ethics becomes the significant problem. As "Dialogic ethics begins with meeting what is before us—the good, the bad, and the ugly" (P 81) ", we need to be comprehensive and respectful to learn, for "Difference opens the door to learning. Dialogue opens the door to other persons and ideas"( P 81). Learning the background and some basic knowledge with patience might be one of the effective way to promote dialogue.
For my personal experience, being an international student brings me much conveniences to know how an effective happens between two groups of people. Taking a simple example, we Chinese are taught to listening to teachers and raising questions sometimes will be regarded as impoliteness to teachers. But when we come to University of Minnesota to be students, raising questions almost anytime is welcomed by teachers and sometimes can be a necessary requirement in class. We cannot make the judgement about which way of teaching can be better, but every decision has its reasons. Eastern people and Western people have difference idea about education and there are different background, like the amount of population and educational level, it is much comprehensive for people to accept differences and to evaluate its effectiveness.
