For example a friend of mines and I attended a U of M game on a random saturday. I wore U of M hat to support my school but my friend on the other hand, and wore a Green Bay Packers hat instead. By me being a U of M student it was common sense for me to not ever dare to wear any other team hat (especially a Green Bay Packers) to a U of M game but him being from Wisconsin, didn't have that same common sense. He quickly learned how bad of an idea that was by how people looked at him and one person even made the comment "how could you wear that disgusting hat, it is common sense not to wear a Green Bay gear here".
This incident was a clear class of common sense losing the common. Because my friend is familiar with being in Wisconsin, where wearing Packers gear is as natural as a flowing river, he felt as if it was okay to wear the hat. The understanding of the hatred Minnesota Vikings fans have for the Packers is not a universal background of common sense but Minnesotan common sense instead.

ReplyDeleteAs the definition of common sense from textbook, it describes common sense as "the commonly understood, taken-for-granted assumptions about the way the world works and expected communicative behaviors one will meet in navigating that world in daily life. The taken-for-granted in this historical moment is that common sense is no longer common. Theory provides a form of public common sense
ReplyDeletethat drives ideas and communication ethics engagement" (P 62). In other words, common sense is a discipline that everyone understands and follows naturally, always without asking why.
Though common sense is naturally performed by everyone, but some times, common sense needs to be explained by members from their community to people who do not know their common sense. Common sense becomes limited even with there are more small groups coming out with the development of Internet and social media. Or in your case, geographic factors may affect people's common sense, and insider should explain their common sense to people who are not conscious. Understand different common sense will promise the effectiveness and quality of communication.
