A keynote concept that was mentioned was the dialectic of direction and change. Commitment to direction and change assumes that presumptuous belief that a given place will exist for all time is dangerous. Communication ethics in business and professional settings require a commitment to two commutative actions clarity of direction and being able to over adversity and pivot and change direction if and when necessary.
Its kind of funny how this works, I have not followed this story very closely but Playboy magazine. As of recently they will be changing or have changed that layout of the magazine to where there will be no more nude women featured in the magazine. It was brought up that with the advancements of technology not many people buy magazines in general because everything is on the internet. Consequently Playboy will go under new development and in a different direction compared to the last forty years of "skin." Showing more articles about life, entertainment, and sports. I think it relates to business and professional ethics because a business can not stay the same forever. It needs to role with the changes and advance into bigger and better things to accommodate to society.
Hello Ryan! Thank you for your posting. I think you pointed out the concept, direction and change, pretty well. In every business, if there is no tradition, the business can't exist, and if no change is involved, the business never gain competitiveness and survive for a long. As you mention, the example of Playboy can explain how important the 'direction and change' is. While keeping thier variety of contents as tradition, they also should take a action to compete against s technological advancement. For instance, they can more focus on their e-version megazin through Interent and have some sprecial promotions or advantages to attract readers from choosing other megazines distributed for free. This situation is not only of Playboy, but also of many other paper megazines' or newspapers' business. Therefore, to survive and keep their profits, they have to appropriately find the way to make changes as well as keeping their own culture and tradition.
ReplyDeleteRyan,
ReplyDeleteGreat post, I liked that you paid attention to dialectic of change and used a different example. I have heard about that story as well but haven't thought about it as related to this topic. Yes technology I believe is one of the biggest reasons why many businesses have to make changes. We see that especially in mass media, newspaper are disappearing and even tv is changing because of media convergence, a channel have to deliver their productions on several media channels to be attractive for the audience. The changes playboy is making is related to the same thing.
