Organizational Communication

"Organizational communication ethics centers on a particular good that defines a dwelling place, which then shapes communicative practices and our interpretive engagement with a community of memory" (141).  Every organization serves to protect and promote a specific viewpoint. The viewpoints become a representation of what that organization stands for and thus this is how organizations get a reputation. The dwelling place invites certain ideas and dismisses other ideas making it really difficult to please everyone. In addition, the dwelling place is a place of negotiation where people take action and decide how the organization will carry out a certain action. However, if a negotiation doesn't take place the dwelling place can become hard to understand and the audience can be easily misled. Thus, it is very important for organizations to have a clear mission statement and be open to change.

The entire justice system could be considered an organization and more specifically the legal process. However, the legal system can be very hard to understand and difficult to deal with because so many people interpret the law differently. In addition, the legal system is not easily accessible to be changed and there is a long and extensive process that has to be utilized in order to enforce change. The dwelling place is a very difficult place to access in the legal system because there are so many restrictions. First of all, in order to work for the legal system there is a lot of school involved and tests like the bar exam that are involved. Hence, many people don't have access to changing the legal system due to so many restrictions.

The dwelling place has a good purpose, but if access to the dwelling place is difficult only a specific group of people will have control over the dwelling place. Hence, if only certain people have access then the purpose or mission will have limited opportunities to grow and expand. I think that it is important for the dwelling place to have an open place where all types of negotiation can take place.

  1. I agree with your idea of a dwelling place should be open for other ideas and not restricted to a minority of people. The legal system has so many rules within the organization it may be confusing to remember all of the rules that are not common sense. I believe that the community should have more say in the legal system when it comes to local problems that arise. If a majority of people give a clear mission statement on what is to be done correctly maybe it will help relieve a lot of priorities the legal system has.
