Organizational Communication Ethics-Ch. 8

Dwelling Place is a term used to describe the structure and communicative practice that a specific organization uses to approach ethical engagement within the organization. Ronald Arnett states, “No organization is ethically neutral” and “Each organization constructs a particular sense of dwelling” (Pg. 141). As Arnett suggests, each organization will have a set of ‘goods’ that defines the organization and each person associated within the dynamic of the organization will have communicative practices to guide and protect the mission or purpose of the individual organization. He also suggests that in order to accomplish this good within an organization, we must negotiate which will be ongoing and forever changing. As the organization evolves, the company will need to restate and reevaluate their good on a daily basis, while still keeping the mission in tack. This is determined to minimize dangers of the settler, which is someone who takes the values of the organization as whole for granted. The dwelling is our sense of structure and purpose within our organization and what steps we take to protect it.

I work for the healthcare organization Allina Health. Having a mission or guideline to acceptable behaviors should be an obvious assumption of any healthcare company and something the company starts each orientation off with. We have a mission that protects and promotes the good of the company while also incorporating patients into the same mission. We do this by our process of ethical practice and honest education. I do this daily when speaking to patients on the phone or in person. We have accepted order and structure on how to approach the diversity of situations. As healthcare evolves and changes we will make changes to promote the good of our dwelling and communication practices with patients and each other in the field. As Arnett states in the book that each organization has a specific dwelling, ours is the protection of information and dialogue to patients.  The ethical decision-making we use to make sure their values are appreciated is an important component. This is specific to our dwelling due to the mission and type of organization we are apart of. This also protects the historical moment that was once defined of medicine. To treat, educate, and provide a hopeful future with individualized care. This supports our mission and good of a dwelling place within the health organization.

  1. I like the emphasis you have put on the dwelling place. The dwelling place is an important aspect of finding an overarching good within an organization. As you stated in the first paragraph individuals within the organization have to negotiate in order to figure out exactly what the dwelling place is that will provide a universal good for the organization.

Your example of your occupation provides an excellent example of organizational communication. Organizational communication involves finding a common ground of ways to do things, According to your paragraph the practicing of ethical communication with patients as well as honest education serves as your organizations dwelling place. That understanding of the organizational communication is sure to provide your workplace with effective communication within the organization and the patients as well.
